How it works

How we deliver

Book a pre-pregnancy consultationideally several months before you start trying, and together as a couple where possible.

History and review. Your GP reviews your medical history, current medications and immunisation status.

Carrier screening. Pre-pregnancy carrier screening can be discussed and arranged, with collection on site.

Preparation. Your GP advises on supplements, immunisations to update before conception, and any medication that should be reviewed.

Ongoing care. Once pregnant, your GP can arrange early pregnancy care and referral to your chosen maternity service.

Our doctors are independent practitioners and set their own fees. Reception can advise the fee policy of the doctor you are seeing, but cannot confirm the exact amount before your visit — your doctor selects the Medicare item number on the day, based on the length and complexity of the consultation. Pre-pregnancy carrier screening is generally not covered by Medicare and is an out-of-pocket cost. Your GP will explain the likely cost before anything is arranged. This appointment is longer than a standard consultation, so a higher item number usually applies. Please mention it when booking so enough time is set aside. Fees are payable on the day by EFTPOS or credit card. We can transmit your Medicare claim electronically so your rebate is returned the same day.

What are your opening hours?
8:30am–4:30pm Monday to Friday, closed public holidays. After hours: Radiodoctor Illawarra 4228 5522 (bulk-billed home visit or telephone), or the Urgent Primary Care Centre at Bulli Hospital 4249 1300.
I need a quick appointment, can you fit me in?
A small number of same-day appointments are set aside — ring reception on 4202 6900. Sick children and pregnant women are prioritised.
What are the best parking options?
Public car parks on Railway Pde, on Station St over the railway bridge, and the large public car park on Church St.
How are fees set?
The doctors are independent practitioners who set their own fees; reception can advise each doctor's fee policy before your visit.
When should we book a pre-pregnancy appointment?
Ideally several months before you start trying, so there is time for screening, immunisation updates and any medication review.
Is carrier screening covered by Medicare?
Generally not — it is usually an out-of-pocket cost. Your GP will explain the likely cost before it is arranged.
Do both partners need to attend?
Where possible, yes. Carrier screening and family history are relevant for both partners.
What about vaccinations?
Your GP will review your immunisation status and advise which vaccines are best updated before conception, and which are recommended during pregnancy.
What is a pre-pregnancy consultation?
An appointment before trying to conceive, covering health checks, immunity, folate and other supplements, medications, and genetic carrier screening.
Do you provide antenatal care?
Yes — we provide shared antenatal care in partnership with Wollongong or St George hospitals.
What is shared antenatal care?
Your pregnancy care is shared between your GP and the hospital, so most routine visits happen locally at our Thirroul practice.
When should I book my first pregnancy appointment?
As early as possible once you know you're pregnant, so early tests and referrals can be arranged.
Which vaccines are recommended in pregnancy?
Whooping cough and influenza vaccination are recommended in pregnancy, and are available here.
Do you offer carrier screening before pregnancy?
Yes — reproductive carrier screening can be arranged before or early in pregnancy.
Do you do baby checks after birth?
Yes — including growth monitoring, development checks and childhood immunisations.
What about the mother's health after birth?
Postnatal checks cover physical recovery, contraception, feeding, and emotional wellbeing including screening for postnatal depression.
